Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Thermal Analysis for Professionals

The SimScale Thermal Analysis course introduces product simulation and analysis for heat transfer applications.

This 5-session course provides engineers and designers with the skills necessary for proper use of Thermal Analysis in the design process. Participants will first study the theory and fundamentals, and then learn about meshing techniques, different analysis types for FEA and CFD and Conjugate Heat Transfer approaches.

Session 1: Fundamentals of Thermal Analysis

  • An introduction to thermal analysis involving solids and fluids
  • The basics of finite element & finite volume methods and the solution approaches
  • Applications of thermal analysis in product development
  • The thermal analysis types available in SimScale

Session 2: CAD Preparation and Meshing Techniques

  • Important steps for preparing a CAD model for thermal simulations
  • Tetrahedral mesh generation for thermal analysis involving solids
  • Hexahedral mesh generation for fluid thermal applications
  • Creating multi-region mesh for conjugate heat transfer (CHT) cases

Session 3: Thermal Analysis Based on the FEA Approach

  • An overview of the thermal analysis types on solid structures
  • Differences between a linear and nonlinear analysis, and their applications
  • Setting up basic thermal simulations using SimScale

Session 4: Thermal Analysis Based on the CFD Approach

  • A basic understanding on buoyancy driven flows
  • The different turbulence models and application of Bousinessq approximation
  • Numerics schemes changes and a study on convergence issues
  • Overview of setting up a convection simulation using SimScale

Session 5: Thermal Analysis Based in the Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) Approach

  • Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) simulation and the solution method
  • The data transfer at the interface between solid and fluid volumes
  • Overview of setting up a CHT case on SimScale
  • Theoretical approach of obtaining results and making comparisons

By the end of the course, you will have a firm understanding of how to effectively use thermal analysis in the product development process and be fully equipped to run successful simulations on the SimScale platform.

Sam attended RWTH Achen University where he obtained his Master's Degree in Computer Aided Conception in Mechanical Engineering. He has experience in the areas of fluid-solid interaction, constitutive modeling of aerogels, and thermal energy storage systems. At SimScale, he works as an applications and support engineer.
